Pediatric dentistry

Pediatric dentistry includes examination of the teeth and oral cavity in children. Any dentist should know how to treat caries in children. Sometimes the dentists refuse filling in the teeth because they consider this action too boring and badly-paid.

They may even leave the teeth uncured until children have sharp pain and the tooth should be removed. But in this case the gums may become insufficiently developed and the teeth will overlap each other. That is why you should fill the teeth of your children.

In pediatric dental clinics you can find experienced specialists who deal with children with diabetes, cyst fibrosis and hemophilia. They can also treat the wounds in the oral cavity which bring much pain to the children.

 Special treatment

Fluorosis: it occurs very seldom that a child swallows too much paste and intoxicates with fluorine. Increased amount of fluorine in water may also lead to violation of the enamel (the so-called fluorosis).

The seriousness of this disease varies from light spots to darkening of the whole enamel which may crack and fall off. Fortunately, in majority of cases people have light form. In order to treat it the dentists just use micropolishing of the enamel.

The surface of the enamel is softened with the help of acidic gel. Then the dark spot is removed with special abrasive materials. In more difficult cases the dentists put additional layer of substances.

Damages of blood-flow: if the tooth has not enough blood its pulp becomes dead. It may also be dark or even lose the color. It occurs also in those cases when the pulp is damaged with carious bacteria or if blood is lost as a result of traumas.

If the tooth dies its canal should be filled in before it starts bleeding. Such dental practices contain use of rubber plaster with styptic substances (hydrogen peroxide). Some time later the plaster should be removed and tooth root is to be filled in.

Nowadays there are a lot of products and tooth-pastes which may whiten the teeth. However, the dentists have doubts about all these devices.

Traumas and accidents: children often fall down and damage mouth and teeth.

We mostly talk about children from 18 months to 2 years. At this age the children only study to walk and can’t take care of themselves. Here are two main problems: intrusion (when teeth come into the gums) and tooth loss (when the tooth is totally broken out).

Milk teeth intrusion occurs rather often. If there are no worries that dislocated primary teeth may damage secondary once, situated deep in the gum, primary teeth then should get into their places themselves. If milk teeth may violate normal teething they should be removed.

Sometimes milk tooth totally comes out. It’s an easy process due to small size of its root. In this case don’t put the cracked tooth on its place. It’s infected and may be harmful for healthy teeth and gums.

Damage of permanent teeth is a more serious problem which needs complicated treatment. If the tooth is cracked it may be restored with the help of filling. It is possible to fix the damaged piece or to replace it with plastic. However, in any case it is necessary to undergo thorough examination (whether the root or neighboring tissues are not damaged) if the tooth is pressed into the gum.

If the tooth root is damaged, the tooth is cracked and pressed into the gum, these structures need additional fixation for some time in order to be restored after the trauma.

The way of fixation depends on the degree of damages. If you have any traumas in the oral cavity you should go to the dentist who will send your child to pediatric dentist.
